This morning, I just got the news that a US judge ruled that Google's online search monopoly is illegal. “Google is a monopolist {having or trying to have complete control of something, especially an area of business, so that others have no share}. and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Judge Mehta wrote in his 277-page opinion. Monday's ruling follows a 10-week trial in Washington DC, where prosecutors said Google spends billions each year paying Apple, Samsung, Mozilla, and others to be the default search engine on their platforms.
In 2020, the US Department of Justice sued Google over its control of about 90% of the online search market.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland, the country’s top prosecutor, called the ruling a “historic win for the American people. “No company—no matter how large or influential—is above the law.”
